For those who don’t know me, I am a Lander and Rock Springs Audiologist (aka Doctor of Audiology). While my main job today is working with our patients to provide diagnostic testing of their hearing and help them achieve the best correction for their hearing loss, my original patients started off much younger. A LOT younger! In fact, before I went back to school for my Master’s and my Doctorate, I spent 12 years as a neonatal nurse practitioner in an intensive care unit. It was only after I adopted my daughter, Wendy, who has some special needs, that I realized I wanted a career that would allow me a less hectic and stressful schedule.
Lander & Rock Springs Audiologist with a Passion for Audiology
My choice to pursue audiology was one that took inspiration from multiple people in my life. The first to inspire me was a childhood friend – one who suffered from severe meningitis as a baby and grew up with hearing loss. The next was my dad, who was a tenure war veteran from WWII. Third was Wendy, who battled many ear infections and, in the end, experienced some hearing loss. Finally, I felt drawn to audiology after years of working in the NICU. After more than a decade of helping tiny, premature babies, I wanted an answer to the question, “What effect did loud noises have on these little babies’ developing ears?” Today, that question might sound silly – after all, all babies today are given hearing tests thanks to our current technology. Back then, however, this kind of technology didn’t exist yet. As it turned out, in my 23 years of audiology that followed, I was able to help implement that technology in several hospitals and thus answer my own questions about those tiny ears.
While I’ve since transitioned from a patient base of newborns to adults, the rewards of my work remain the same. Many people who suffer from hearing loss end up removing themselves from activities they once loved (events like concerts or movies), because they don’t want to put themselves in a position where difficulty hearing might occur.
Today’s hearing aid technology and computer-based auditory processing programs can play an important role in helping those with hearing loss to achieve fuller and more active lives. Helping my patients to make the best decisions regarding their hearing health and to reduce the isolation that hearing loss can cause is incredibly rewarding.
How I Joined Intermountain Audiology Hearing Clinics of Wyoming
As for how I came to Intermountain Audiology, that move was actually fairly serendipitous. While I myself am not a native to Rock Springs, my husband grew up here, and after meeting him several years ago and marrying him in Florida, it seemed right to come back out West. While our 8 children and 14 grandkids all live across the country, in a way, Wyoming is ideal, because it’s between Texas and the Washington/Oregon area, where many of them live. We do have a few in Florida, but the nice thing is that after we visit them, we’re typically able to stop by and see the Texas bunch on our way back home.
Outside The Office
When we’re not spending our free time with our families, Bob and I enjoy volunteering at our church. We are both counselors in a multi-stake group called Special Needs Mutual. Wendy, who is now 31, is also very involved there. Beyond that, my two special hobbies are playing the piano and reading. In fact, I love books so much, I finally had to buy a Kindle because we ran out of room for all my paperbacks.
I look forward to seeing you all very soon!
